Cardiology
Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and conditions related to the cardiovascular system, which includes the heart and blood vessels.
Our treatments vary depending on the specific condition or disease being addressed.
- Medications: Cardiologists often prescribe medications to manage and treat various cardiovascular conditions. These may include medications to control blood pressure (antihypertensives), lower cholesterol levels (statins), prevent blood clots (antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs), regulate heart rhythms (antiarrhythmics), or improve heart function (heart failure medications).
- Lifestyle modifications: Cardiologists emphasize the importance of lifestyle changes to improve heart health. These modifications may include adopting a heart-healthy diet (such as the Mediterranean diet), engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, managing stress, and limiting alcohol consumption.
- Procedures and interventions: Cardiologists may perform or recommend various procedures and interventions to address specific cardiac conditions. Some examples include:
- Angioplasty and stenting: This procedure is used to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels (usually coronary arteries) by inflating a balloon-like device and placing a stent to keep the vessel open.
- Cardiac catheterization: It involves inserting a thin tube (catheter) into a blood vessel to visualize the heart’s arteries, chambers, and valves. It can aid in diagnosing and guiding further treatment.
- Pacemaker implantation: A pacemaker is a small device implanted in the chest or abdomen to help regulate abnormal heart rhythms. It sends electrical impulses to the heart to maintain a steady rhythm.
- Cardioversion: It is a procedure to restore normal heart rhythm using electrical shocks or medications.
- Rehabilitation: Cardiac rehabilitation programs are often recommended for individuals who have experienced heart-related events or undergone cardiac procedures. These programs include exercise training, education on heart-healthy living, counselling, and support to help patients recover and improve their overall cardiovascular health.
- Surgical interventions: In some cases, surgical procedures may be necessary. Cardiologists work closely with cardiothoracic surgeons to perform surgeries like coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to bypass blocked coronary arteries or valve repair/replacement surgeries to address valvular heart disease.
It’s important to note that the specific treatment options will vary based on the individual patient’s condition, severity, and overall health.
